Pro Horto Strgar – since 1968!

Pro Horto Strgar tree nursery, based in Črnuče, is the only large tree nursery in Ljubljana with its own plant production. The company was founded in 1968 by Jože Strgar, then a craftsman.

He studied horticulture and spent several years in Belgium with Elena de Belder and in England. He designed a tree nursery in Črnuče and was was the first to work in gardens in those days. He was also editor (Our Garden Magazine) and author of dozens of books and manuals.

When he became Mayor of Ljubljana in 1990, his son Andrej took over the company and since then it has been operating as Pro Horto Strgar d.o.o. The owners of the company today are Andrej and Katja Strgar, Andrej being a university graduate in landscape architecture and also a sworn horticultural assessor.

Timeline

1968

Establishment of the company, founder Jože Strgar.

1971

Relocation of the company from Dravlje to Črnuče, where it is still located.

1972

Planting a tree nursery.

1989

Andrej Strgar passes the professional examination at the Ministry of Justice and obtains the title of sworn valuer and agricultural expert in the field of horticulture (gardens and parks).

1990

Andrej Strgar graduated from the Faculty of Biotechnics, Department of Landscape Architecture.
Jože Strgar becomes Mayor of Ljubljana, and Andrej Strgar and his wife Katja take over the company.

1998

Renovation of the garden centre and opening of the shop.

1999

Andrej Strgar passes the professional examination at the Chamber of Environment and Spatial Planning and obtains the titles of Authorised Landscape Architect and Authorised Spatial Planner.

2016

Eva Strgar is studying for her Master’s degree at the Faculty of Biotechnics, Department of Landscape Architecture.

2020

Eva Strgar passes the professional examination of the Bavarian Chamber of Architects (Bayerische Architektenkammer) and obtains the title of Landscape Architect (Landschafsarchitektin).
